YEAR ONE COURSE CONTENT
Detailed below, the learning year consists of two Terms. Each Term, students will study four Courses simultaneously. Courses are made up of nine units or chapters. So each week, students will read the assigned unit for all four courses. (Ex: Week of 9/21, Year One students will read Unit 1 of Bible Overview, Gospel Transformation, Church History, and Evangelism.)
The amount of time this takes per week is largely dependent upon each individual student and their personal learning styles, habits, and abilities. On average, this may take anywhere from 3-9 hours per week.
- TERM 1 -
BIBLE OVERVIEW
Following the themes of God’s people, in God’s place, under God’s rule, this course walks us through the bible as the story of God's mission to redeem the world through his Son. Along the way you’ll find out why the church is so central to mission, and how to see everyday life through the gospel lens. This course is not only an introductory bible overview, it will cast a vision for mission in everyday life, through the local church.
GOSPEL TRANSFORMATION
This course examines how the truths of the gospel are the only foundation for true, lasting change. It takes you straight to the Cross, and offers practical help for tackling unbelief and sin. As we see the Lord Jesus in all His glory, majesty, beauty, and love, He captivates our hearts so that the attractions of sin start to wither and fade in our lives. Just as we become Christians by faith and repentance, so we grow by faith and repentance.
CHURCH HISTORY
Some people are intrigued by church history, others more sceptical. In this course we’ll look at the big picture with the big players and the big moments. But if you dive further into any one moment within that story you ’ll find the same thing at the micro level: people like us, with the same faith, the same fears, the same Savior. But as you do, our aim is that you’ll find that your walk with Christ is enriched in a number of ways.
EVANGELISM
Evangelism is an amazing privilege because it means we get to share in the happiness of God. Perhaps God could have found some other way to apply the salvation of Jesus to people’s lives. But he chose a way – the evangelism of his people – that means we get to share in the process. Jesus commissioned us to make disciples from all nations (Matt. 28:18-20). Jesus wants us to take the message across the globe so that other people can become Christians. And he equips and strengthens us to do so.
- TERM 2 -
READING & UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE
This course helps you to focus on how the Bible intends us to approach and interact with the Bible as God's Word. It will take you through three particular types of Bible text - the Epistles (or letters), the Gospels, and the Psalms. The final section is all about how we can apply God's word to our hearts and our lives, putting the Bible's teaching into practice as we live godly, responsive lives that bring glory to God.
GOSPEL RELATIONSHIPS
This course helps develop a “gospel grid” that you can apply to each new relational challenge you face or each new responsibility you have. This course examines six perspectives that develop a gospel mindset and then apply them to different kinds of relationships and sin problems that can bring tension and grief in those places.
GOSPEL COMMUNITY
This course on Gospel Community is a deep dive into this idea from the Bible, centering on a study of Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. Each unit in this course will focus on various critical aspects of this letter to the Romans, and build upon the truths and commands within. It will invite you to experience gospel community intellectually in the course, and incarnationally, in your own gospel community.
APOLOGETICS
This course helps develop skills in giving better answers to important questions that come up when speaking with unbelievers. This course covers seven key areas that we will explore together, providing strategies for developing your own responses to apologetic questions. Investigating what good answers can and cannot do, you’ll learn how to expose underlying issues that sit beneath most questions, and what persuasive responses look like.
YEAR TWO COURSE CONTENT
The amount of time this takes per week is largely dependent upon each individual student and their personal learning styles, habits, and abilities. On average, this may take anywhere from 3-9 hours per week.
- TERM 1 -
REFORMED DOCTRINE
What do we mean when we say we are a “reformed church”? This course examines the basics beliefs of reformed theology and offers a deep dive into some of the key ideas from the Reformers - such as “the Solas” from Luther, and the “five points” of Calvin. You’ll be given courage and hope with this study of the rich and beautiful truths we find in reformed theology.
SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES
We know that we are not saved by works or actions. Yet God has given us disciplines in which we experience Him more deeply, understand truth more fully, and become more like Him as He makes us more mature in Christ. This course provides a foundation for why we engage in spiritual disciplines, and highlights many of them in depth to spur you on in your own discipleship.
ECCLESIOLOGY (MARKS OF THE CHURCH)
Martin Luther taught there there were “marks of the true church” - helping Christians understand the things that make a church… a church. This course studies those marks, and examines their application for our own context today.
COVENANT HOUSEHOLDS
Men and women, husbands and wives, roles within the home - these are more than just “hot topics” of recent conversations in (and outside) the church. This course provides a biblical foundation and deep understanding for God’s design of Christian homes and how we are to apply this in our own families.
- TERM 2 -
UNION WITH CHRIST*
Perhaps the most common way the New Testament refers to Christians is as those who are “in Christ”: those who are united with Christ. As we shall see, this union with Christ is right at the heart of who we are as Christians, how we are saved, how we are to live as Christians, our hope for the future. This course dwells on what Jesus' cross and resurrection achieved, and how that changes everything for us. It is a deep dive into what being "in Christ" actually means, and makes a perfect devotional tool for those wanting to meditate on these truths and draw closer to Christ.
PASTORAL CARE*
The Christian life is difficult for everyone – and, as believers, God calls us to walk alongside each other through both the good and the bad. This course equips you to turn towards one another with confidence in Christ. As the units progress, you'll gain an understanding of who people are, why people struggle, the biblical process of change, and our role in that process. You will also explore the manner in which we can all engage in that pastoral care, conscious that Christ-like character is vital when encouraging others to persevere or change to be more like the Lord.
WORSHIP & LITURGY
Why do we do what we do on Sunday mornings? What is the purpose of our liturgical gathering and what role does each piece play? Does what we do on Sunday truly shape who we are the other 6 days of the week? This course offers a deep dive into our liturgical worship gatherings, and helps you discover a live-giving reality of spiritual formation through what we do, say, and sing each Sunday.
CULTURE*
Christians want to change things. We want to see God's shalom, his peace and healing, flow in our world. That means engaging culture, including popular culture. How to do that is not an easy question. How do we construct a perspective that engages with the world without becoming conformed to the world? How do we speak truth and grace into a world that so actively resists it?
**A special note for students continuing straight from Year One (2024-25) to Year Two (2025-26)**
In building out additional learning years and spreading courses out so that each Year provides 8 courses (vs. the original 12), we’ve determined that several courses (Union With Christ, Pastoral Care, and Culture) must be moved from Year One into Year Two. We realize that for you going straight into it, this would cause you to take these courses again. We assure you that this will not be a waste of time or investment for you. For this year only, we are developing a unique version of these courses for you so that it doesn't feel like you’re immediately redoing a course you just completed.
